New York Housing Authority

The New York City Housing Authority provides housing for low and moderate income residents throughout the five territorial division of New York City. New York Housing Authority also administers a citywide Section 8 Leased Housing Program in rental apartments. Many of its facilities are known popularly as "projects," or "developments" and are associated with poverty and crime. As a security measure, these premises are patrolled by a special unit of the New York City Police Department Housing Bureau. It was created in 1934. At the end of 1935,New York Housing Authority was dedicated to their first development, called First Houses, located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The authority is the largest public housing authority in North America.


The New York Housing Authority Conventional Public Housing Program has 181,581 apartments in 345 developments throughout the city. New York Housing Authority has approximately 15,000 employees serving about 175,116 families and approximately 417,328 authorized residents.

New York Housing Authority has 8 program and is the largest in the United States. We administer approximately 83,000 Section 8 vouchers serving 270,000 New Yorkers. Over 29,000 landlords currently participate in the program. New York Housing Authority reserves Section 8 vouchers for emergency applicants who are referred by the New York City Administration for Children's Services or those who are classified as intimidated witnesses or victims of domestic violence. As of May 15, 2007 New York Housing Authority will only accept Section 8 applications from emergency applicants. In conventional public housing tenants are assigned apartments owned by this housing authorities.
